I first hiked up to Heiðarvatn in the summer of 1986, just to take a look at it. My father-in-law had told me about fishing there, as he and his family had relied on it to provide food for the household throughout the century. He clearly held the lake dear, though he never described it as a “good” fishing lake. He said it was practically hopeless to fish it with a rod. Not that he had tried it much himself, as the family always set nets in Veiðivík. He once told me about an attempt to set nets in the winter when the lake was covered in ice. He had noticed a crack in the ice for some reason and set the net along it. Not much came of it, but he did catch one trout.
I hiked to Heiðarvatn as autumn was beginning to approach. The hike is strenuous, and I was wearing a rubber rain suit, so I sweated profusely during the trek. It was worth it, however, as three decent brown trouts were landed.
