The first fishing trip to Þingvallavatn in the summer of 2012 was highly educational for me. I draw my lesson from the mistakes I made at the beginning, which resulted in me catching only one small char, while my fishing companion was cleaning up on the char.
I had heard of a fishing spot in the lake where I caught fish last year. I wanted to show my fishing companion the spot and got him to come with me to the lake last Sunday. Usually, I take both spools that come with my fly reel to the fishing spot. On one spool is a floating line, and on the other, a clear, slow-sinking line. This time, I only took the clear, slow-sinking line and left the other one in the car. I should not have done that.
When we arrived at the fishing spot, my companion soon catches a fish. A decent snail-eating char (kuðungableikja), but I get nothing. Shortly after, he gets another, and I get nothing. Then he gets a third one, which is reasonably large, but I get nothing. Now I was getting suspicious (fóru að renna á mig tvær grímur), because we couldn’t see any difference in how we were going about the fishing. We cast in exactly the same spot, let it sink, and retrieved it slowly. This went on until he had landed nine beautiful char.
