The Grandi construction club’s fishing department decided to head to Steinsmýrarvötn from July 6th to the 8th. We understood that at this time, the sea trout had not yet arrived in the lakes, but there was local trout in the waters. We had never fished in these lakes before, so we were going in rather blind. My companion Valli planted himself at area four and stayed there almost the entire time. The rest of us were more mobile and explored the area further.
It must be admitted that we were not too fond of the conditions at the lakes, as there was nowhere to sit down, since we were fishing in a bog. It must also be admitted, however, that we fished well—actually, embarrassingly well—because in the house next door to us lived people we knew who were fishing in Grenlækur. They did not catch a single fish, while we filled the freezer that was there for both houses. When all was said and done, the Construction Club broke a fishing record that will undoubtedly stand for a long time. One hundred and six trout, as I recall, were landed.
Most memorable from the trip was the largest fly-caught fish I had ever landed, which turned out to be a four-pound trout that took in the small river stream above the bridge. My companion Valli fished incredibly well in area four and was practically exhausted when the fishing ended. I landed about 35 trout myself, five of which were caught in Aðalsmannsvatn.
