The same temperature as in a refrigerator
The builders are currently working on our new summerhouse in Brautarlækur. Therefore, there´s not so much work for me and my wife, so we could take time to go on our annual fishing trip to the lake on the moor. We were not in a hurry to leave the city though. We watched the runners in the Reykjavik marathon run by our house in thousands before we left the city. This year 14.300 people participated and there have never been more. We arrived in Brautarlaekur around two o´clock on Saturday.
Somewhere between half past six and seven, we arrived at the lake. We walked straight down to the lake and started fishing in a bay called Breiðavík (Wide Bay). Just before eight o´clock, a three-pound brown trout took the fly black nobbler in the west end of the bay. Meanwhile, my wife was fishing in a bay called Veiðivík (Fishing Bay). She did find fish there but did not land any. I walked further to the west towards the spot where we have often found fish. Not this time though.
I strolled back and we had dinner in the middle of Breiðavík. After dinner, my wife casts the bait and immediately a four-pound fish took it. This was at eight forty. Seven minutes later she landed another smaller one which who was one and a half pounds. I was sure there was a fish in the spot west of Breiðavík so an hour later I walked over there again. I had no luck with the fly but I knew that the fish was sometimes further out than I could cast the fly. So I took the cast rod and whipped a Topy spinner as far as I could and another four-pound trout was landed.
The temperature was about the same as in a refrigerator this evening when we started fishing. About three degrees and some wind. These conditions mean cold hands. Fortunately, the wind calmed a bit and became more easterly, but still, it blew from the north. Just after midnight we were back and in bed. Very happy to have new fish in the freezer and happy to be able to give the Lithuanian builders a freshly caught pink fish from the heath lake.
